Health Sciences Librarian in Agha Khan University

Aga Khan University (AKU) is an international university with campuses in Pakistan and East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in the UK. AKU also offers medical and nursing training programmes in several countries (Afghanistan, Egypt and Syria). AKU’s development projects include the creation of a new Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) in Nairobi, Kenya and a considerable expansion of its medical campus in Karachi.

Aga Khan University, Karachi invites applications for the position of Health Sciences Librarian.

Applications should be submitted latest by January 15, 2010.
The Health Sciences Librarian will be responsible for:

• Providing library and information services to the faculty and students of AKU’s School of Nursing and Medical College and to the staff of Aga Khan University Hospital at the Stadium Road campus in Karachi;

• Implementing a new integrated library management system;

• Familiarizing the staff with the new system as well as the use of international bibliographic standards (i.e. MARC, Mesh subject headings, etc);

• Expanding information resources to meet the growing needs of the Institution;

• Representing AKU and the FHS on relevant forums;

• Managing budgets and human resources of the FHS library.

Requirements

Candidates should have:

• A Master’s degree in Library/Information Sciences from an accredited institution; a first qualificant in the life sciences would be an added advantage;

• Minimum 5 years of experience in an academic health sciences institution or hospital library, including 2 years in a managerial/supervisory role;

• Knowledge of on-line and printed medical information resources and integrated library management systems;

• Sound knowledge of international bibliographic standards and formats for academic and medical libraries;

• Experience in developing and implementing training programmes and resources for library staff and users as well as information literacy programmes for students;

• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues, students, faculty and medical staff;

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills;

• Prior experience of working in a developing country would be an asset.
